On 1 January, Cyprus assumed the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, presenting a programme centred on the concept of autonomy across security, economic, external and social policies. The programme emphasises Europe’s ability to act independently on the global stage, alongside continued support for Ukraine, effective migration management, strengthened partnerships with neighbouring regions, and progress on economic resilience and democratic values.
In the area of sport, the Cyprus Presidency plans to put forward Council Conclusions on sport tourism, recognising its potential to support economic growth, social inclusion and environmental sustainability, and to underline sport’s role in sustainable development. It will encourage active ageing by integrating physical activity into healthcare systems, support initiatives addressing athletes’ mental health, and facilitate discussions on integrity in sport, including anti-doping matters. In addition, the Presidency will open dialogue with the Southern Neighbourhood on the establishment of a possible voluntary Mediterranean Sport Council, in line with the Pact for the Mediterranean’s People Pillar.
