Eurostat published updated data the development in employment in sports between 2022 and 2025, highlighting four consecutive years of growth in sport employment. According to the data, in 2025 sport employed 1.8 million people in the EU, accounting for 0.9% of total employment. Significantly, the data shows that 36.2% of people employed in sport are aged 15-29. This number more than doubles the share of young people in comparison to overall employment (17.1%). The share of total employment has increased in 21 of the 27 EU countries between 2022 and 2025. The growth since 2022 is linked to the recovery after the COVID-19 crisis, during which employment fell in many countries. In 2025 men represented 56.3% of people employed in sport, leaving the gap in gender representation persistent. Additionally, in 2025 40.1% of people employed in sports had completed tertiary education.
