Belgium takes over the Presidency of the Council of the EU

The beginning of 2024 has been marked by the official start of the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the EU for the upcoming 6 months. The Belgian Presidency will adopt the EU Work Plan 2024-2027 and address the role of non-organized sport and free physical activity in a European sport model. Additionally, the Presidency will continue the efforts initiated by its predecessor, Spain, focusing on the eradication of acts of hate and the promotion of the training, visibility and leadership of women in sport, which also aligns with the objectives of the EOC EU Office’s project GAMES of improving gender equality in the key leadership and decision-making positions in sport. The Belgian Presidency´s programme is structured around six general priorities: Defending the rule of law democracy and unity; Strengthening our competitiveness; Pursuing a green and just transition; Reinforcing our social and health agenda; Protecting people and borders; Promoting a global Europe. These objectives have been notably presented to the European Parliament’s Committee on Culture and Education on 11 January. Belgian Ministers were questioned on their strategies to finance the Erasmus+ programme and to increase youth participation in EU decision-making.
