Marking the European Week of Sport, MEP Nina Carberry (EPP, Ireland) hosted a debate on how to address barriers to physical activity on 23 September. With nearly half of European adults not engaging in regular exercise, the discussion underlined the urgent need for stronger EU action. Giorgio Guazzugli Marini, Head of the European Commission’s Sport Unit, emphasised that “sport is not just a luxury, it is a fundamental cornerstone for a healthier, more resilient Europe.” He pointed to the importance of scaling up local best practices with the help of Erasmus+ funding to incentivise regional actors to learn from each other. Furthermore, examples from Ireland showcased the impact of sport on society. Phelim Macken (Limerick Sports Partnership) presented the success of the Community Sports Hubs and Active Cities initiatives, proving how physical activity can drive systemic change within communities. Irish Senator Evanne Ní Chuilinn called for greater support for women and girls in sport. At the same time, ghron (International Diabetes Federation Europe) highlighted the role of sport in managing chronic diseases. All participants agreed that EU funding is a game changer and, with a view to the upcoming MFF 2028–2034, called for sport to be strongly prioritised within the framework.
