On 7 October, the European Parliament adopted the Initiative Report on the “Role of EU Policies in Shaping the European Sport Model” with a strong majority, following a plenary debate on 6 October. Rapporteur Bogdan Zdrojewski (EPP, Poland) warned that European sport is increasingly threatened by commercialisation, foreign ownership, and profit-driven models, calling for a renewed EU commitment to protect its social and grassroots dimensions. Commissioner for Intergenerational Fairness, Youth and Sport Glenn Micallef echoed these concerns, describing the European Sport Model (ESM) as “under attack” and urging joint action to defend it. The EOC EU Office closely followed and contributed to the report through exchanges with the rapporteur and stakeholder consultations. The adopted report strongly supports the ESM’s principles, underlines sport’s societal role, and stresses the need for transparency, equality, and inclusive governance. It calls for greater stakeholder participation, particularly of athletes, fans, and underrepresented groups, and demands adequate EU funding for all levels of sport. This report marks an important step in reaffirming the EU’s commitment to safeguarding the European Sport Model as a public good to promote democracy and cohesion.
