In preparation for the upcoming communication of the European Commission on “A Strategic Vision for Sport in Europe: Reinforcing the European Sport Model”, to be presented in 2026, Commissioner Glenn Micallef met with 25 young people at the Union Saint-Gilloise Stadium in Brussels on the 26 May to discuss the future of sport in Europe. The discussion focused on increasing youth participation through improved infrastructure, education, and greater involvement in sport governance. Participants also addressed the role of elite and para-athletes as role models, the importance of supporting athletes’ mental health and dual careers, and the need for greater inclusion of athletes with disabilities. The conversation then turned to the vital contribution of volunteers to grassroots sport, emphasising the need for increased recognition, support, and educational opportunities. Throughout the event, participants shared good practices from across Europe and ways in which the European Sport Model can support the future of sport.
The EOC EU Office was represented by current trainee Mathea Saliba (Malta), who spoke about the importance of supporting structures and funding for volunteers to safeguard their involvement and impact made from volunteers.
