As part of the SHARE 2.0 Community of Practice on Green Sport, an online capacity-building event “Leveraging EU Funds for Sustainable Sport Infrastructure” was held on 18 June 2026. The discussion revolved around the need for sport infrastructure to remain fundable under future EU funding programmes and how to best position sport when competing with projects from other sectors. Peter Fischer, policy officer at the European Commission’s Sport Unit, provided insights into the Commission’s proposal for the next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF), including its climate and environmental considerations. Jakob Krones, representing the EOC EU Office shared further insights into the joint Committee of the Regions and EOC EU Office event on the role of sport in the future MFF, echoing discussions on sport’s socio-economic returns and role as an enabler to achieve broader EU policy objectives. The Green Sport Manifesto was presented and a panel debate explored ways of developing sustainable sports infrastructure through measures improving energy efficiency, biodiversity protection, and promoting sustainable mobility. Speakers also encouraged sport organisations to collaborate with municipalities to look beyond funding calls explicitly labelled as sport-related and to align projects with broader EU climate and urban development priorities to unlock additional funding opportunities.
