Power in Participation: Embracing Democratic Values in Sport

Democracy is not just about holding elections; it is about fostering inclusive governance where every voice can be heard. For sport organisations, this means embedding democratic principles into statutes and ensuring that these foundational documents reflect fairness, inclusion, and clarity.

The electoral process must be transparent, regular, and accessible, giving stakeholders a real say in shaping the leadership and direction of the organisation. This cultivates legitimacy and ensures that decisions are made with the support of the wider community.

Informed and inclusive decision-making processes are also essential. By creating spaces where members can actively participate, sport organisations benefit from diverse perspectives and better outcomes. The inclusion of athletes in governance is particularly important, as they bring valuable insights from lived experience and deserve a meaningful role in shaping the environment in which they compete.

Democratic principles help build trust, foster engagement, and enable the co-creation of sport systems that reflect the needs and aspirations of all stakeholders. When participation is promoted, sport becomes more resilient, inclusive, and reflective of its community.
