MEPs' engagement in sports policies: online piracy of sports events and the European Sport Model

This week, MEP Iban Garcia del Blanco (S&D), co-chair of the European Parliament Sports Group and member of the Committee on Culture and Education stood up for sports in the development of EU policies. On 9 and 10 October, M. Garcia del Blanco attended the Conference on combatting online piracy of sport and other live events held by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). M. Garcia del Blanco affirmed that the European Commission should protect European values in order to ensure the viability of the sports channels and to prevent revenues from flowing to criminal organizations. On 11 October the MEP took the floor at the European Professional Football Forum held by the Union of European Clubs (UEC). The event presented the contemporary discourse in the realm of football as revolving around the issue of club representation and presenting challenges to the overarching football ecosystem. In an opening statement, M. Garcia del Blanco stressed the fundamental characteristics of the European Sport Model consisting of its pyramidal structure, the solidarity function and the crucial role of grassroots sport clubs.
