European Parliament finalises position on 2025 EU budget, emphasising Erasmus+ expansion

Following a debate on the 2025 EU budget on Tuesday, the European Parliament voted on its position on Wednesday, 23 October. Although the adopted text is not yet officially available, certain details are already clear. After last week’s Budget Committee (BUDG) vote on their position, Parliament has confirmed its commitment to restoring €1.52 billion in funding cuts proposed by the Council, setting the overall budget at nearly €201 billion. A key highlight includes a proposal of €70 million increase for the Erasmus+ programme, aiming to make the programme more accessible. MEPs also stressed that rising repayment costs for the European Recovery Instrument (EURI) should not reduce funding for essential programmes like Erasmus+. The next step involves three weeks of negotiations with the Council to finalise the budget before the end of the year.
