EUROPEAN COMMISSIONER GLENN MICALLEF CITES SAFE HARBOUR IN REPLY TO THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT ON VIOLENCE IN SPORT

The SAFE HARBOUR project has been explicitly highlighted by European Commissioner Glenn Micallef in an official response to a European Parliament question on combating gender-based and sexual violence in sport.

In his reply, Commissioner Micallef underlined the role of Erasmus+ funded initiatives in strengthening safeguarding standards in sport, including through training, reporting and victim-support mechanisms, and practical guidance for sport organisations. In this context, he specifically referred to SAFE HARBOUR and its work towards a shared European framework for responding to safeguarding concerns. The reference provides important recognition of SAFE HARBOUR’s contribution to the broader EU effort to prevent violence and strengthen safeguarding responses in sport. It also reinforces the relevance of developing common, practical tools that can support National Olympic Committees, Federations and other sport organisations when safeguarding concerns arise.

The Commissioner’s response followed a parliamentary question submitted by MEP Emma Fourreau on EU action to prevent gender-based and sexual violence in sport, improve reporting and victim protection, and support the training of sport managers.
