A Bolder, Simpler, Faster Union: Highlights from the European Commission Work Programme 2025

On 12 February, the European Commission presented its Work Programme and Annexes for 2025 during the European Parliament plenary session, where Members debated its key initiatives. The Programme with the motto “Moving forward together: A Bolder, Simpler, Faster Union”, prioritises competitiveness, sustainability, and social fairness.

Several initiatives are particularly relevant for the sports sector. Among the few legislative initiatives kicking off in 2025, are the proposals for the Multi-Annual Financial Framework 2028-2034. It will be important to position sport well in these initial proposals.

Additionally, the Union of Skills aims to enhance workforce capabilities across Europe. The Apply AI Strategy will focus on the use of artificial intelligence in various sectors, while the European Climate Law amendments and the Revision of the REACH Regulation will address sustainability and environmental policies. The Action Plan on Affordable Energy is set to tackle energy costs and security.

The EU Preparedness Strategy will strengthen crisis management and resilience. The EU Strategy to support civil society aims to protect and empower organisations working in social and democratic fields. A roadmap for gender equality is foreseen for the beginning of the year while the end of the year expects equality strategies on LGBTIQ and anti-racism. Evaluations of regional development and social funds will assess their impact and guide future investments.

The EOC EU Office will monitor the evolution of the Work Programme’s initiatives and will keep its partners informed throughout the year on the most important decisions.
