European institutions agree on the need to increase EU budget to tackle current crises

Created on Monday, 21 Nov 2022 10:03:00

On Monday 14 November, European Parliament and Council of the EU reached a provisional agreement on the 2023 budget. Parliament obtained more than an additional billion compared to the Commission’s proposal, with increased funds to deal with the Ukrainian and energy crises. Among the several programmes that will receive additional funds are Erasmus+, Horizon Europe, LIFE Programme and Creative Europe Programme. Parliament and Council have now to formally endorse the agreement.

In this context, on Thursday 17 November,  the European Parliament's Budgets committee adopted a resolution calling on the Commission to propose an urgent revision of the 2021-2027 “multiannual financial framework” (MFF), in order to respond more effectively to the evolving needs. The MFF will undergo an "ambitious review," according to the European Commission, in the second quarter of 2023.
